SUNSHINE

Just as plants require sunshine for photosynthesis, humans require regular sunshine on the majority of the body at the right time of day to boost mood, produce vital vitamin D, and much more. The fear of the sun that we as a society have embraced in the last few decades has caused us more harm than good. A lot of recent research suggests that we need more sun not less.

Sunshine instructions summary:

  • When - in spring, summer, and fall months get your sun in the middle of the day when the sun is high in the sky and your shadow is short.

  • How Much Sun - Your skin type determines how much sun you need - darker skin needs more, lighter skin needs less. Allow direct sunshine UNTIL the skin starts to turn the lightest shade of pink. At that point your body produces a vitamin D oil that is slowly absorbed into your bloodstream through your skin.

  • What Body Parts - The rule of thumb is to allow direct sun on as much of your body as possible. Protect sensitive parts of your body such as your face to prevent premature wrinkling.

  • If you shower after sun exposure, DO NOT USE SOAP WHEN YOU SHOWER for up to 48 hours- soap will wash off the vitamin D oil that is on your skin. It is okay to rinse your body with a shower but do not use soap, except for maybe on your armpits and genital area.

  • Sunscreen - do not use sunscreen when sun bathing. It will hinder your vitamin D production. Again, be careful not to burn your skin. When your skin is starting to turn pink, cover the skin with clothing, get full shade, or go inside.
